The word ‘sahaj’ is a multi-connotational word, whose literal meaning is ‘sah’ (with) and ‘ja’ (born). Its evolved meanings include, easy, natural state, discretion, thought, wisdom, the Supreme Being, etc. Within the Guru Granth Sahib, sahaj refers to a state of Divine love and awareness that is beyond the influence of worldly attachment (Maya). When an individual continuously and consistently implements the Guru’s teachings (Sabad-Wisdom) in one’s life, the state of sahaj is reached, which is then permanently etched into one’s consciousness. This perpetual state of Divine love and awareness (sahaj) is indicatively translated as inherent/natural state, intuitive poise or equipoise.
