There are two opinions available regarding the revelation of this Bani in the Guru Granth Sahib's traditional commentary. According to the first preface, Guru Arjan Sahib composed this Bani in response to that request of the Sangat, in which it was said, “O supporter of the poor! Please tell us a story that will take our minds away from worldly entanglements and bodily attachment. According to the second preface, the composition of this Bani is associated with two persons named Hari Lal and Krishna Lal. These two men came from Kashi to Guru Arjan Sahib in Amritsar. They listened to the Guru's teachings on ‘Sahaskriti Mahala 5’ and requested the Guru to tell another story. At their request, the Guru uttered this Bani.
